COLORADO SPRINGS — On May 20, healthcare workers at St. Francis Hospital were greeted with warmth and appreciation as local officials held signs and banners to honor these front line workers.

The Pikes Peak United Way, News 5, and other elected officials teamed up to cheer for doctors, nurses, and other hospital administrators as they walked into work.

"It's so important to tell them, 'We see youm, we appreciate you, and we feel what you're going through," said Pikes Peak United Way Board Member, Stephanie Fortune.

According to the CDC, at least 9,000 healthcare workers across the country have contracted COVID-19. From PPE shortages to concerns of exposing family members to the virus, healthcare workers are under tremendous strain.
Since March, doctors and nurses across the world have been recognized for their tireless efforts in fighting this pandemic, and that act of kindness is catching on.

"I was so touched and charmed by seeing the balconies of people in Italy and New York, and I thought, why can't we do that?" Fortune asked.

Throughout the month of May, members of different organizations will be holding up banners to show their support for front line heroes at different hospitals, but in a safe manner. Everyone participating must wear a mask, gloves, and must also practice social distancing. These gatherings will also be limited to fewer than 10 people in order to abide by the safer-at-home order.
