COLORADO SPRINGS — On Friday, nine local Colorado Springs organizations received significant gifts from the estate of long-time Colorado Springs residents Milton and Darlene Johnson.

The estate donated over $2 million dollars to those organizations as the Johnson's were strong believers in supporting their community.

City leaders say these donations are proof that investing in ones community sends a strong message.

"The fact that we had some elderly residents that really cue into this, and were very excited about what was developing, I think is a great story and I'm hopeful other people in Colorado Springs will be inspired by it," said Colorado Springs Major John Suthers.

Darlene moved to Colorado Springs in 1957 followed by Milt in 1960. Darlene was a teacher in School District 11 for 19 years, teaching at Audobon and Ivywild elementary schools.

Milt was a pharmacist at Broadmoor Drug inside the Broadmoor Hotel.

Recipients of the funding include the D11 school district, Pikes Peak Library District Foundation, UCCS, the Olympic Training Center & the Olympic Museum, where the donation took place.
