BLOG: Winter weather impacts traffic and across Front Range

COLORADO SPRINGS — A few flurries may pop up overnight tonight. The roads are a mixed bag, ranging from dry in places to icy, slushy and wet. Be careful on the roads as it gets later, because anything wet will turn to black ice by morning.

5:54 p.m.

The Air Force Academy has announced that their roads conditions are "YELLOW." Basically, that means there is low visibility with icy and even snow covered roads in the area.


4:30 p.m.

For the most part, we're done getting any serious snow tonight. You may see a few flurries here and there, but nothing like earlier. The break in the snow helped with the roads considerably. Some areas have dried out a bit and others are wet and slushy. The wet and slushy areas are where you're going to have to be cautious overnight and into the morning. Anything that's wet now will freeze overnight and become icy in time for your morning commute. Use extra caution on bridges, ramps and overpasses.

2:50 p.m.

SB/NB 25 between Pueblo Blvd. and north of PPIR-Poor visibilty and winter driving conditions. Icy bridges, ramps and overpasses.

2:40 p.m.

Great news! All lanes are open NB 25 between County Line Rd. and Plum Creek Pkwy. Bad news! Very long drives in both directions between Castle Rock and Colorado Springs!

2:25 p.m.

If you happen to be in need of a tow truck, you're facing and hour -plus long wait at this time.

2:20 p.m.

Left lanes blocked EB/WB Hwy 24 at 21st Street. Car straddling median wall. EB Hwy 24 after 21st. accident blocking lanes.

2:00 p.m.

CSPD closing Union and Austin Bluffs Pkwy. until sand trucks can work in the area. Too many crashes and extremely icy.

1:55pm

NB 25 after County Line Rd. traffic getting through in one lane only.

1:30 p.m.

The City of Fountain is now on ACCIDENT ALERT status due to low visibility and snow accumulation on the roads.

1:25 p.m.

CSPD CLOSING all lanes both NB/SB Powers between Stetson Hills and Barnes due to weather and poor road conditions. Avoid the area and take alternate route.

1:20 p.m.

NB I-25 is now OPEN between County Line Rd. and Plum Creek Pkwy. Expect extreme delays between Castle Rock and Colorado Springs. Remember, speeds lowered to 45 mph.

1:10 p.m.

The TRACTION LAW IS NOW LIFTED on Highway 24 between Manitou Springs and Woodland Park. Icy conditions continue. Show caution.

12:45 p.m.

Multiple accidents: NB 25 at Circle-2 rollover accidents. SB 25 after Garden of the Gods, NB 25 at Bijou, Rockrimmon west of I-25. SLOW DOWN.

12:40 p.m.

Numerous accidents on Hwy. 24 between 31st Street and west of Manitou Springs. Extremely icy conditions. Slow down and use caution.

12:30 p.m.

The Colorado State Patrol is on ACCIDENT ALERT in the following Counties:

Arapahoe, Clear Creek, Douglas, Jefferson, Gilpin, Teller and Weld. If you're involved in a minor accident, no drugs or alcohol is suspected and no public property is involved, exchange information with the other driver(s) and you can either file your report online at https://mydmv.colorado.gov/_/

Latest snow totals from First Alert 5:

  • A trained weather spotter 4 miles NNE of Florissant has reported 2.7" of snow so far.
  • A trained weather spotter 1 mile SE of Pueblo West has reported 1.7" of snow.
  • Woodland Park 2.75" of snow.

11:30 a.m.

Traction Law in effect on Highway 24 between Manitou Springs and Woodland Park. TRACTION LAW: Motorists must have either snow tires, tires with the mud/snow designation, or a four-wheel drive or all-wheel drive vehicle.

the required minimum tire tread for vehicles on snowy roads has also been increased to 3/16 of an inch. Drivers can also use chains to comply with the law if the tire tread is too low.

11:15 a.m.

11:10 a.m.

Northbound I-25 is now CLOSED at COUNTY LINE RD. at the El Paso CO/DOUGLAS CO. line. Crews are working to sand Hwy 83 to be used as alternate.

10:50 a.m.

Colorado Department of Transportation said a passenger vehicle traction law is in place between MM 148 and MM 154.

10:48 a.m.

Two crashes were reported near Briargate. One is on southbound I-25 at Briargate that is blocking the left lane and the other is northbound I-25 south of Briargate. The one on northbound I-25 south of Briargate is between a car and lightpole.

10:33 a.m.

Colorado Department of Transportation announced it is dropping speed limits on I-25 through the Gap to 45 mph during the storm.

10:27 a.m.

CDOT said northbound I-25 is closed between Exit 174 Tomah Road and Exit 181 Plum Creek Parkway due to a crash. There is no estimated time of reopening right now.

10:24 a.m.

A three-car crash on Highway 24 near Divide, according to the Teller County Sheriff's Office. They said roads are icing and becoming slick. Use caution while driving.
