Jury selections begins for shooting trial of Isaac James Klippert

EL PASO COUNTY — Jury selection for the Fort Carson soldier who is accused of accidentally shooting and killing one person begins Monday.

21-year-old Isaac James Klippert has been charged with Felony Manslaughter, Assault with a Deadly Weapon and Misdemeanor Prohibited Use of a Firearm.

Just before 10 p.m. on December 1st, El Paso County deputies responded to a report of a shooting at a home in the 3600 block of Saguaro Circle.

According to the Sheriff's Office, when deputies arrived they found a deceased victim with a gunshot wound. The El Paso County Coroner identified the victim as 25-year-old Cesar H. Diaz.

Klippert told investigators that in the accidental shooting he thought that the handgun that he fired at his friend was unloaded.

According to the probable cause affidavit, Klippert and the victim were part of a group that spent most of the say shooting guns along Old Stage Road.

When they returned to returned to the victim's house. they cleaned their weapons and began playing card and drinking.

A Glock pistol that belonged to a man identified as Brandon Rock was left on the card table sitting next to Klippert.

Klippert told deputies that he'd drank three 16 ounce beers prior to the incident.

Fort Carson says Klipper was assigned to the 3rd Armor Brigade Combat Team, 4th Infantry Division. His hometown is Yakima, Washington.
