IGNACIO — A man is being held on suspicion of first-degree murder as a result of an alleged homicide that happened at an Ignacio home on Dec. 31, 2020.
The Colorado Bureau of Investigation said they believe 44-year-old Damon Lamont Matthews murdered his wife, 47-year-old Rachel Phillips Mathews, at their home in the 100 block of Romero Ave. on New Year's Eve. Authorities said Matthews then fled the scene and drove to the Denver Metro Area.
Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office Deputies later responded to a traffic accident call in the 5000 block of S. Kipling St., in which Matthews was involved. He was placed into custody on New Year’s Day and is currently being held in the Jefferson County Detention Facility.
In addition to the Ignacio Police Department and the CBI, the Sixth Judicial District Attorney’s Office is involved in the investigation.
Matthews is being held at the Jefferson County Detention Facility without bond. He will be transported to La Plata County in the coming days.
