COLORADO SPRINGS — A welcome surprise for families being helped by Catholic Charities on Wednesday.

They were expecting over 800 turkeys to be delivered by Safeway from their fundraising efforts.

Well they hit that number and then some. The unexpected windfall is greatly needed.

''When we thought we were only getting eight-hundred and seventy-six in, we were worried that we were going to come up short, so the bonus is going to be excellent. We will meet the need, and if we have any left over, then we'll use that here at the Marian House," said CEO Catholic Charities Andy Barton.

Safeway stores raise money through reaching out to customers to donate extra change at the counter.
