ASPEN — The Pitkin County Sheriff's Office and rescuers have recovered the body of a climber who fell approximately 200 feet and died while trying to summit Maroon Peak.

Deputies were alerted to the incident Wednesday around 7:05 p.m. when the International Emergency Response Coordination Center called Pitkin County dispatchers to report the activation of an SOS beacon on the standard route to Maroon Peak. Data showed the person died at approximately 12,600 feet in elevation on the 14,156-foot mountain.

Authorities recovered the victim's body Thursday afternoon and they helped the other two climbers who were hiking alongside the victim return back down the mountain.

Authorities have not yet identified the climber, pending family notification.
