BENT COUNTY — A grass fire ignited Friday afternoon in southeastern Colorado.

According to KBLJ Radio, based in La Junta, the fire is burning east of the town of Las Animas, in Bent County.

The radio station said they received word from people that live nearby that the fire was south of Highway 50, east of County Road 16, and in the river bottom.

La Junta Fire, Rocky Ford Fire, and other agencies responded to assist Las Animas Fire in fighting the blaze.

Colorado Parks and Wildlife also reported that the fire burned on to the John Martin Reservoir State Wildlife Area.

The Bent County Sheriff's Office reported that Fort Lyon had been evacuated, but approximately an hour later said the evacuation had been lifted.

Shortly after 5 p.m., the Sheriff's Office reported that the fire had burned between 3,000 and 4,000 acres but was 80 percent contained.
