Gardner man killed in crash in Huerfano County

HUERFANO COUNTY — Colorado State Patrol is investigating a single vehicle crash that left one man dead Saturday night in Huerfano County.

According to State Patrol, a Suburban was traveling south on Colorado 69 Saturday night when the vehicle went off the road, began to spin, and overturned before hitting a CDOT fence.

The driver was ejected as the vehicle overturned and his body came to rest about 100 feet from the vehicle, State Patrol said.

State Patrol has identified the driver of the vehicle as 54-year-old Michael Mathason of Gardner, Colorado.

Mathason was pronounced dead at the scene by the Huerfano County Coroner. State Patrol said he was not wearing his seat belt at the time of the crash and alcohol is believed to be a factor in the crash.
