Fremont County altering approach to fighting wildfires due to COVID-19

FREMONT COUNTY — Fremont County is changing the way it battles wildfires.

The plan is to focus on air drops at the start of a fire instead of having crews on the ground.

For example, if the wildfire conditions are perfect, like during the Royal Gorge or Hayden Pass Fires, air drops will be used to try and stop the flames from spreading quickly.

"We have had another dry year, so it all comes back to safety, getting out there getting on it but keeping us safe so we can respond to everything in Fremont County and not just one specific incident," Fremont County Emergency Manager Mykel Kroll said.

Firefighters are also staying with their respective stations to fight fires because of COVID-19 restrictions.
