COLORADO — A 58-year-old inmate who was in custody at the Fremont Correctional Facility died at the hospital Tuesday after experiencing COVID-19 symptoms, according to the Colorado Department of Corrections.

The department said the man was taken to a Canon City-area hospital on Oct. 14 and later transferred to Littleton where he died almost two weeks later.

Fremont Correctional Facility has been following modified operations since Oct. 6. Here are the modifications:

  • Inmates who are quarantining remaining in their cells unless they are using the restroom or showering
  • Meals and medications are taken to inmates in their living units
  • Inmates have access to normal personal property

There has been regular testing of the staff over the last several months along with inmate surveillance to help determine who is positive and needs to be quarantined. The department said the majority of inmates who have tested positive have been asymptomatic or had mild symptoms.
