FLORENCE — A shooting that left a 64-year-old man dead in Florence is under investigation, according to the Florence Police Department.
The department said officers responded to a residence in the 800 block of E. 5th St. just after 10 p.m. The 64-year-old man, later identified as John Achterkirch, was taken to Penrose Main Hospital by helicopter to be treated for a gunshot wound, but the man later died as a result of his injuries.
Police detained a 57-year-old man at the scene of the shooting. The department said there is no threat to the community at this time.
The shooting is being investigated by the police department, the 11th Judicial District Attorney's Office and the Colorado Bureau of Investigation.
