COLORADO SPRINGS — Colorado Spring street crews are out and will be through what is going to be an extremely cold Valentine’s Day weekend. There is snow likely and the sub-zero temperatures make it more difficult to keep roads from getting icy.

"As we get into tonight , into tomorrow and then into Sunday we're going to see our salt products, our magnesium chloride products become almost ineffective,” said Colorado Springs Public Works, Operations Mange, Jack Ladley. The treatments do not work well when temperatures get below the high teens.

Crews turn to a long-time staple for dealing with ice on roads. "We'll put sand down, said Ladley, “It's not ideal, but it keeps traffic moving. It keeps things as safe as we can keep them."

Crews will do all they can to keep roads passable. Drivers need to be aware that the extreme cold will increase odds of untreatable slick spots.
