PUEBLO — Evraz announced plans to move forward with building a new steel mill in Pueblo.

Pueblo City Council approved a $15 million incentive package to help Evraz build a new long rail mill in 2018.

On Thursday Evraz told city leaders they accepted the plans.

As part of that incentive package, Evraz would invest more than $200 million in equipment, and employ about 1,000 people.

The Pueblo Economic Development Corporation called it the largest economic development project for the city in decades.

Governor Jared Polis also praised the news, calling it an "important milestone" for the city.

I’m thrilled that the steel mill’s new expansion has passed this important milestone. Pueblo workers have been making the world’s best steel for nearly 140 years, and with this addition, Pueblo’s next generation of steelworkers can count on good-paying jobs well into the future
