COLORADO SPRINGS — The El Paso County Sheriff's Office has identified the inmate at the El Paso County Jail who died by suicide on Tuesday.

Deputies say the inmate, now identified as Michael Roach, 45, was found in his cell "attempting suicide by hanging" around 1:15 p.m. on May 12.

When deputies responded Roach was not breathing and had no pulse. Deputies began CPR and used an Automated External Defibrillator, or AED, with the help of responding medical staff, but Roach could not be revived.

The Sheriff's office said it extends its deepest sympathies to his family and friends.

This death is the first successful suicide at the El Paso County Jail since June 2019, according to the EPCSO.

The sheriff's office said this investigation is ongoing and that more information would be released as it becomes available.
