Suspect in custody following standoff in Security

EL PASO COUNTY — The El Paso County Sheriff's Office was on scene Sunday in Security where a suspect was barricaded in the 1000 block of Main St.

Residents in the area were asked to shelter in place from the intersection of Main through Hallam and Birch, the Sheriff's Office said.

The Sheriff's Office told a News 5 crew on scene that the standoff started as a domestic disturbance when a woman called just before 11:00 a.m. to report that a man she has a restraining order against had entered her home. The woman and her two children were able to safely exit the home, but the man, identified as Thomas Flores, remained inside.

According to a release from the Sheriff's Office, Flores came out around 2:35 p.m. carrying a tire reamer and charged deputies, trying to hit them. Several deputies got him under control and disarmed him, then arrested him.

After he was medically cleared Flores was taken to the El Paso County Jail. he faces charges including two counts of attempted murder of a peace officer, multiple counts of assaulting an officer, and violation of a restraining order.
