EL PASO COUNTY — The Hanover Fire Department said a driver was taken to the hospital after hitting a cow with their car at approximately 60 mph Wednesday night in El Paso County.

Firefighters said the car was traveling on Squirrel Creek Road, just east of the M&M Ranch, when they hit the 600-800 pound cow head-on. It caused extensive damage to the front of the car and the windshield. Fortunately the driver was wearing their seat belt, likely preventing a fatal crash.

Hanover FD said the department sees social media posts about cattle that are freely ranging in that area and near S. Peyton Highway. It warned people to slow down and to be extra cautious in those areas to avoid future crashes like these.
