COLORADO SPRINGS — One person died and another was injured following a suspected drive-by shooting Thursday evening at an apartment complex, according to the Colorado Springs Police Department.

The department responded around 7:15 p.m. to the Westview Apartments near South Academy and Airport. Officers found two people with gunshot wounds and performed life-saving measures on one of the victims before they died at the hospital about one hour later.

The El Paso County Coroner's Office conducted an autopsy of the man on Friday and police identified him Tuesday as 38-year-old Jerome Nelson. The other victim was taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

The department said there is no known threat to the public, but there have been no arrests made at this time. Nelson's death is being investigated as a homicide, the 27th homicide investigation in the city this year. At this time last year, the department investigated 17 homicides.
