Cub orphaned after bear attack in Jefferson County is found, taken to rehab

PINE — One of the cubs orphaned after a bear attack in Jefferson County earlier this week has been captured and taken to a wildlife rehabilitation facility, officials said Saturday.

The cub's mother had entered a home in Pine, where a couple fought off the sow. Colorado Parks and Wildlife officers found the mother bear the next morning and euthanized her, but her two cubs were missing.

The one cub was captured Saturday morning and officials were still trying to catch the other cub, according to the CPW's Northeast Region office.

The captured cub will be taken to Frisco Creek, a rehab facility near Del Norte, where employees will try to mimic the conditions of the wild for the bear.

The attack happened Monday night in Pine.

The bear had entered the home with a cub and started eating the couple's food – escaping without serious injuries, the sheriff’s office says.

The mother bear and its cub entered the couple’s home in Pine around 8:30 p.m. Monday and started eating a loaf of bread, the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office said Tuesday.

The two homeowners went to investigate noises in their home and found the bears. Colorado Parks and Wildlife said the fight between the sow and the man was described as "a boxing match."

The sheriff’s office said the man was scratched and cut on his face, chest and arms by the bear but that he was not seriously injured and was treated at the scene. His wife was not injured.
