COLORADO SPRINGS — The Colorado Springs Police Department is investigating a shooting south of downtown that left one dead Monday afternoon.

The incident occurred in the alley behind 525 S. Nevada Ave. The business listed for this address is Water Works Car Wash & Detail.

CSPD said officers responded to reports of a shooting around 3:40 p.m.

Officers said the victim was driving down the alley when he stepped out of his vehicle and came into contact with the suspect. CSPD said the victim was shot at least once and dead at the scene when officers arrived.

The suspect then tried to flee the scene in a red SUV and hit an unmarked police vehicle, which rolled onto its side. The officer was not hurt.

Officers then detained the suspect.

"It's a little unsettling because it's so close and it's unfortunate, but it's a crazy world we live in these days," said Jon Fyock, who lives downtown.

CSPD said this is being investigated as a homicide.

The department closed South Nevada at Rio Grande, Las Animas Street and Moreno Avenue for the investigation. The streets were reopened around 6:45 p.m. Monday.

There is no danger to the public.
