COLORADO SPRINGS — Investigators with the Colorado Springs Fire Department (CSFD) are working to figure out what caused a fire at a house near Mid Shooks Run Park.
According to Lieutenant Fred Varnell with CSFD, the fire happened outside of the house- where a stack of firewood was placed. Varnell says the house is a hoarder house, which made for some challenges as they took care of the fire quickly.
Only one person was inside the house, and firefighters were able to rescue them. No one was injured.
Putting out the fire didn't take long, Varnell says they were able to put out the flames in about a minute and a half. One neighbor, Kenneth Roberts, called 911 when he saw the flames. The fire department credits him with helping them get to the flames quickly.
"I was scared, I was shaking, I was actually shaking because it's a scary thing seeing something like that and we were concerned that anybody or animals was over there," said Roberts.
The size and how quickly the fire spread is what shocked Roberts the most.
"It got huge, the flames were 20 to 30 feet in the air and it looked like it was just burning the house down." said Roberts.
CSFD wants to remind people to keep firewood away from homes as it can catch fire easily.
Investigators have not announced the cause of the fire.
