COLORADO SPRINGS — A 13-year-old boy who was ejected from a car that crashed into an electrical substation, causing a major power outage that lasted a few hours last Monday, died as a result of his injuries, according to the Colorado Springs Police Department.
Police said the teen was taken to the hospital with life-threatening injuries and died on Tuesday, one day after the accident.
The Colorado Springs Police Department said a vehicle was traveling southbound on North Academy Boulevard near La Salle Street just before 1:30 a.m. when the crash happened.
The crash caused tens of thousands of customers to lose power, but Colorado Springs Utilities tweeted that service had been restored around 4:15 a.m.
Southbound Academy was closed while officers investigate and the closure has continued into Monday afternoon. Approaching the 5 p.m. rush hour, the closure remained.

Officers said the vehicle rolled over several times and that they are currently investigating whether the boy was the driver or occupant in the car. During the department's investigation, officers learned there were two other people, both juveniles, in the car.
The department said this is the 19th traffic-related death this year and that the investigation is on-going.
