Colorado Parks and Wildlife has launched a new trail closure tracking feature on the Colorado Trail Explorer, or COTREX, app.
The app uses input from local, state, and federal partners to monitor trail-related COVID-19 closures across Colorado every day.
Those closures and alerts are represented by symbols on the map when viewing details about a trail, trailhead, or visitor center.
CPW says COTREX does not plan to report closures for public facilities like playgrounds and recreation centers not associated with trails.
The COTREX app also lets users customize their search based on location, activity, vehicle type, or trail needs like wheelchair accessibility or dog-friendly trails.
While the goal is to update every day, CPW says to check with local land managers for further guidance on responsible recreation.
CPW says while it understands how important outdoor recreation is during the COVID-19 pandemic, it's important to stay close to home and limit travel to prevent spread of the virus.
Staying closer to home also helps limit the strain of visitors on small communities and creates less burden for search and rescue crews and other first responders.
