COLORADO SPRINGS — A peace officer memorial in Colorado Springs has been vandalized, resulting in $50,000 worth of damages, according to the Pikes Peak Region Peace Officers' Memorial Foundation.
The foundation said the damage was done to the granite part of the statue during the last two weeks of June.
The names of the officers at the memorial were scratched through with "a chisel or other sharp object." The foundation said the repair cost is estimated to be $50,000 to restore it to its original condition.
"We are looking at other replacement options, but even if it is less expensive, we will have the added cost of increased security measures at the site and additional insurance," the foundation posted on Facebook and linked a GoFundMe to help raise funds for the repairs..
The memorial has been damaged in the last two years, but this is the most "egregious."
