FORT COLLINS (AP) — A northern Colorado wildfire that began as a prescribed burn has been fully contained.

The Larimer County Sheriff’s Office announced containment of the Elk Fire northwest of Fort Collins late Friday. It said the fire would be staffed through the weekend.

Residents of about 50 homes were ordered to evacuate Wednesday after the burn, conducted by The Nature Conservancy, grew into a wildfire. Only a shed was destroyed.

The Coloradoan reports that Livermore Fire Chief Donn Maynard said officials lost control of the burn after winds shifted.

The Nature Conservancy plans to investigate what happened. The sheriff’s office will also review the prescribed burn with the Colorado Division of Fire Prevention and Control.
