CAÑON CITY — A man has been charged with careless driving causing death after striking and killing a pedestrian on July 31, according to Cañon City Police.
Cañon City police said 87-year-old Robert Sergeant hit 67-year-old Mark Bennett in the City Market parking lot off Fremont Drive. According to autopsy results, the cause of death was blunt force trauma to the head.
CCPD said the preliminary investigation showed that Sergeant was pulling into a parking space when he accidentally hit the gas instead of the brake. Investigators said Sergeant's Ford Focus also hit a parked vehicle, which pushed into another vehicle.
Officers on scene said Sergeant didn't show any signs of impairment and he had no previous driving convictions.
