PUEBLO COUNTY, Colorado — The Town of Boone does not currently have a functioning fire department. Fire chief Robert Franz recently resigned and all of the volunteer firefighters left with him.

That left the town shorthanded when a fire broke out last Sunday, December 13, inside of an abandoned print shop.

Dispatchers sent units from the Pueblo County Sheriff's Office Emergency Services Bureau, the Pueblo Rural Fire Department, and the Pueblo Chemical Depot's fire department to extinguish the flames.

According to the sheriff's office, VFW Post 8898, which shares a wall with the print shop, sustained minor damage in the fire.

Kerry serves on the Boone Town Council and told us, this has happened before.

"When the last fire chief quit, all of his department went with him until we restarted and then a lot of those firemen came back on," she said.

Kerry expects the fire chief vacancy will be on the agenda for the next town council meeting.

Editors Note: An earlier version of the story incorrectly identified the fire chief of the Boone Volunteer Fire Department as Josh Patterson. Mr. Patterson was the chief prior to Robert Franz. We apologize to Mr. Patterson for this mistake.
