Two killed when Amtrak train hits car in Las Animas

BENT COUNTY — A driver and passenger are dead following a crash involving an Amtrak train west of Las Animas. Colorado State Patrol says it happened around 8:30 this morning in Bent County on Highway 50 at County Road 8.75, near mile marker 397.

CSP is identifying the driver as 35-year old Samuel R. Cornejo and 35-year old Gabriela Martinez . Both of them are from Las Animas and the State Patrol says they were wearing their seat belts at the time of the crash.

There were 126 passengers and 12 crew members on the Amtrak train. No passengers on the train were injured, and the train continued to its destination after troopers finished their investigation.

The crash happened at in intersection with Railroad Crossing markers, but no crossing gates or lights. Alcohol, drugs and speed are not being considered as factors in the accident.
