Academy School District 20 restarted its free meal program Wednesday for the spring semester.

The new program was extended through the end of the school year (June 30th) by the federal government.

The meals provided are given to anyone under the age of 18. If a family shows up to a pickup site during the designated time, they can get meals for their students, at no cost.

"We serve about 10,000 meals per week. That is breakfast and lunch," said Greg Stephens, Academy School District 20 Contracts Officer.

Once the meals are packaged, they are distributed at various times at seven different schools.

"The meals are free whether they're in school or remote. Some of the folks were asking if I attend school, do I have to pay for my meals. No, they're free," said Stephens.

Stephens says last semester the district saw a decline in the amount of meals being distributed.

"We reached out to the reduced lunch population and found that some were not aware of the free meal distribution," said Stephens. "We're looking to get the word out that we have free meals for all children under the age of 18."

There is no sign-up requirement for the program, Stephens says families can just head to one of the designated locations for meal pickup.
