El Paso County commissioners to vote on variance to reopen multiple facilities

The El Paso County Board of County Commissioners will vote on a "sweeping multi-sector reopening variance" that will apply to gyms, theaters, malls and more. This will be the fourth request the county will make to the state health department in an effort to open businesses back up. The presentation will begin this morning at 9 a.m. News5 will be streaming this on our Facebook page and online.

Rain and SNOW are back in southern Colorado today

Rain and yes, SNOW, are both back in the forecast this morning! A deepening low-pressure system brought cold air into the mountains and we'll see bands of snow in Teller, Fremont, Custer, and north to western El Paso County through the morning hours. Rain and a few thunderstorms will keep spinning across the plains longer into the afternoon as this whole system slowly moves east through Kansas.

Cripple Creek casinos can reopen next week

After months of being temporarily shut down due to COVID-19, casinos in Cripple Creek will soon be able to welcome back gambling fans. On Monday, Teller County's variance request was approved by the Colorado Department of Public Health & Environment. Along with a go ahead from the Division of Gaming casinos say they are allowed to officially reopen on June 15 at 10 a.m.

Outdoor World Arena events to provide boost for local businesses, community mental health

Locked down snack bars and empty seats are the reality inside sports and entertainment venues in Colorado and across the country in the wake of coronavirus. Concerts, sporting events, even graduations are all things we are used to seeing at the Broadmoor World Arena. During the coronavirus pandemic, the arena has remained empty as restrictions on large gatherings continue. Leaders at the arena say it's time to try something different: safe outdoor entertainment.

George Floyd to be buried following Tuesday funeral in Houston

George Floyd, the man who died in the custody of the Minneapolis Police Department in late May and whose death has sparked a nationwide protest movement against police brutality, will be buried today following a private funeral in Houston. The funeral, which will take place at The Fountain of Praise Church in Houston, will be livestreamed online and carried live by several news networks. The "celebration of life" ceremony will begin at 12 p.m. ET.
