EL PASO COUNTY – A group of veterans are traveling across America as a salute to their brothers who came before them and to support our current service members.

They’re on a mission to go from sea to shining sea in a horse-drawn wagon. The idea started as a promise between Jesse Morton and a friend he served with in Vietnam. But Morton’s friend never made it home from the war.

Now in his 70s, Morton is joined by three veterans who served in Iraq and Afghanistan, who are helping him keep that promise.

“We’re going to help him go to the west coast. Last year we traveled 466 miles. We went from St. Louis, Missouri to Belvue, Kansas. This year we’re going from Belvue to Colorado Springs,” explains Luke Reinhold.

News5 caught up with the group as they headed west into town along Highway 24. We understand they’ll be in El Paso County for the remainder of the week.

The group is tackling the task for 4 weeks every year until Jesse Morton fulfills his promise.

The veterans are also raising awareness about the organization Dogs That Help, which works to provide service animals to military veterans living with post traumatic stress.
