COLORADO SPRINGS – Colorado Springs police say they’re investigating a fatal crash as a vehicular homicide after they determined speeding and impairment may have been a factor.

Police said the crash happened early Wednesday morning around 5 a.m. at the intersection of Maizeland Road and Wold Avenue.

Officers said a black Nissan SUV headed eastbound on Maizeland Road smashed into a silver Cadillac sedan while it was turning left onto Maizeland from Wold Avenue.

Police said an adult male died at the hospital from his injuries. They told News5 the damage was so severe that it took first responders 20 minutes to free him from the car.

CSPD Public Information Officer Lt. Howard Black said the woman behind the wheel of the SUV was taken to the hospital, but her injuries are not considered serious. He said alcohol use and excessive speed might have contributed to the crash.

The victim’s name and the woman’s name have not been released.

All lanes of Maizeland reopened around 9:55 a.m.
