COLORADO SPRINGS – The Colorado Springs Police Department is reminding gun owners not to leave cars in unlocked vehicles.

CSPD says every year hundreds of guns are taken in vehicle break-ins and are then used in other crimes.

In 2016 251 guns were stolen from vehicles, in 2017 the number dropped to 196, but in 2018 there were 296 guns stolen from vehicles.

CSPD says to never keep anything in your vehicle that a burglar would consider valuable, including guns.

The department also says to keep your vehicle locked at all times when you’re not using it, and take the garage door opener out when you leave the vehicle.
