EL PASO COUNTY – The Colorado State Patrol is asking any witnesses to a fatal crash Wednesday night on Interstate 25 near the Mesa Ridge Parkway to come forward.

Authorities said a 2014 Volkswagen Passat rear-ended a Honda CRV driven by 33-year-old Lucas Huffman of Colorado Springs, causing him to go into the median and into oncoming northbound traffic. His car hit sedan almost head-on.

Although Huffman was wearing a seatbelt he was ejected from the vehicle by the impact. He was pronounced dead on scene.

The driver of the sedan suffered minor injuries. In a news release about the crash, troopers said “charges are pending at this time” as they investigate the actions of the driver believed to have caused the crash.

At one time during the cleanup and investigation, CSP alternated northbound and southbound traffic on the southbound side of the interstate, causing significant backups on both northbound and southbound I-25 during rush hour.

If you witnessed this crash, call the Pueblo Regional Communications Center at 719-544-2424.
