Canon City man arrested after making threats, fighting with officers

FREMONT COUNTY – The Fremont County Sheriff’s Office has arrested a Canon City man on multiple charges.

According to the Sheriff’s Office, deputies received information on Monday that 51-year-old Gary Gene Sanders Jr. had made “homicidal statements” threatening people who were on their way to McKinley School to pick up a juvenile.

Deputies located Sanders on the road and contacted him in Canon City.

The Sheriff’s Office said Sanders appeared to be intoxicated and was in possession of a firearm.

When deputies attempted to place Sanders under arrest he began to fight with them and would not comply with commands.

The Sheriff’s Office said after a brief fight he was taken into custody.

Three deputies were treated and released for minor injuries.

Sanders was treated for minor injuries and transported to the Fremont County Detention Center where he is being held on the following charges:

  • Second Degree Assault on a Peace Officer – 4 counts
  • Felony Menacing
  • Possession of a Weapon by a Previous Offender
  • Resisting Arrest
  • Prohibited Use of a Weapon – Under the Influence
  • Obstruction of a Peace Officer
  • DUI Alcohol
  • Drove Vehicle Under Revocation
