MICHIGAN – A former Fort Carson soldier is dead, now his wife and her apparent lover have been charged with his murder in Michigan.

Sergeant Tyrone Hassel III was shot and killed outside his father’s home in Michigan on New Year’s Eve. Sgt. Hassel was stationed in Georgia, but came home while on leave.

Prosecutors believe his wife Kemia conspired with her lover, 24-year-old Jeremy Cuellar, saying they wanted the money from Hassel’s $100,000 life insurance policy. Cuellar is accused of waiting to ambush Hassel, then shooting him several times, according to prosecutors.

However, his wife had already collected the insurance. Kemia and Cuellar both face charges of first-degree premeditated murder.

“You got to understand man. This is a person that slept in my home,” said Hassel’s father. “I spent two weeks with this person after she killed my son. I grieved for her more than I grieve for myself.”

Sergeant Hassel was stationed at Fort Carson before he transferred to another installation in Illinois. Both Kemia Hassel and Jeremy Cueller are also active duty soldiers.
