COLORADO SPRINGS – Flu season is far from over which means it is not too late to get your flu shot.

Safeway and Albertson’s stores are offering free flu shots without an appointment is necessary, all you have to do is show your insurance card.

The Director of Pharmacy Operations at Albertson’s told News5 that getting a flu shot not only prevents and protects you from the virus, but it also helps to reduce your symptoms faster than those who have not been vaccinated.

Plus, you will get coupons for your next trip to the grocery store.

People at high risk include young children, the elderly, pregnant women, and those with chronic illnesses. However, everyone six months and older should be vaccinated every year.

According to the latest flu numbers from the Center for Disease Control, Colorado is one of 24 states with “widespread flu activity,” and nearly 1,000 cases have been reported.

Over 900 Colorado residents were hospitalized for the flu so far this season, with 11 outbreaks in long-term care facilities according to the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment.

A 50-year-old Pueblo man died after complications from the flu this month.

Some prevention tips you can follow besides getting the flu shot are:

  • wash your hands frequently
  • avoid people who are sick
  • cover your nose and mouth when you cough or sneeze
  • disinfect easily contaminated surfaces like phones, door knobs, and tables
