PUEBLO – Drivers on Lincoln Street in Pueblo might notice a unique crosswalk. The Colorado Department of Transportation installed a High Intensity Activity Crosswalk — or Hawk — near the intersection of Lincoln and Belmont.

The new system was activated this week.

CDOT installed the system because the crosswalk technology was outdated, and the busy street sits between two schools.

“You know it is important for safety,” said CDOT spokesperson Michelle Peulen. “We want, whether you are a driver or pedestrian, we want you to be safe while using our roadways.”

It’s the first signal of its kind in Pueblo. CDOT says the system has been shown to reduce pedestrian crashes.
