COLORADO – Swink may be a small town nestled in the heart of the Arkansas River Valley, but it can boast about a big item it has.

The small Colorado town has a 166-foot flag pole. It is being called the tallest one in the state.

“To build that pole, it was fairly difficult,” project leader Wayne Walter said.

Walter said he got pipe from New Orleans, Kansas City, and Colorado to build the towering pole.

The project was all put together just in time for Veterans Day. A ceremony was held in the snow complete with a 21-gun salute.

“The reason why I wanted to put the flag up is for our veterans and our community,” Walter said.

Marine Corps veteran Robert Lucero appreciates having a monumental item near him.

” Well, just being down the street from the tallest flag pole in the state of Colorado, it gives us a lot of pride that we have that flag flying beautifully. Everyone is going to see it for miles,” he said.

Walter said a memorial is going to be built around the flag honoring the different branches of military.
