PUEBLO COUNTY – The Environmental Protection Agency will visit Pueblo County to test the soil at Runyon Sports Complex for toxins similar to those found at the Colorado Smelter Superfund site just up the street.

Pueblo County commissioners have agreed to having the EPA test for lead and arsenic on the sports fields.

However, Commissioner Terry Hart says there is no need to panic if you or your children are using the fields.

“The main thing we want to make clear is that we believe that we do have a healthy environment at Runyon because of all the work that has been done over the last number of decades. But we also want to know is there anything below the surface. If there is something below the surface that has the potential sometime in the future, we want to know about it and get it cleaned up,” explained Hart.

The County expects EPA personnel to visit the site this winter.
