FRUITA (KKCO) – A Fruita, Colorado family is under scrutiny for flying a swastika flag outside of their home.
The family lives just down the road from an elementary school.
On Tuesday the owner of the flag refused to go on camera but said it was his American right to fly the flag and that he had no intention to take it down, but Wednesday morning the flag was no longer there.
Black Lives Matter Grand Junction is looking to fight what they call a symbol of hate, with symbols of love.
“We need the individual who feels so comfortable flying this flag to understand that this doesn’t make America great, you can’t hide hate speech behind free speech,” says Samantha Harris, a BLM community outreach coordinator.
BLM is hoping to take old political lawn signs and re-purpose them by putting messages of love and acceptance on them. Then, they will put them in the neighborhood where the flag was flown.
