PUEBLO – Pueblo Police arrested a suspect in a shooting that happened around noon Wednesday on the city’s south side.

Police arrested 28-year-old  Mariano Rael Wednesday afternoon hours after a 23-year-old victim was found with a gunshot wound to his abdomen in the 2000 block of Carlee Drive, near Briarwood Park.

Officers arrested Rael at 2 p.m. at a residence in the 400 block of Routt Ave. Following a short negotiation, Rael surrendered and was arrested.

Rael was booked into the Pueblo County jail on attempted first-degree murder charges. According to PPD, the shooting was likely drug-related. Police said the investigation was still active.

The victim, identified as 23-year-old Daniel Vaughn, is in critical condition following surgery Wednesday night.
