Suspect in Westminster dies after charging police with knife

WESTMINSTER – An armed burglary suspect is dead after he was shot to death by Westminster police officers in an apartment on 97th Ave. west of Federal Blvd. on Tuesday.

The homeowner contacted police and told them he was locked inside of his bedroom and that a man with a knife had broken into his apartment. When officers arrived, they found the front door had been forced open.

The suspect charged towards the officers and they fired their weapons. The suspect was pronounced dead on the scene. The homeowner and the police officers were not injured.

The 17th Judicial Critical Incident Investigation team will be investigating the shooting. Both officers will be placed on paid administrative leave, per protocol.

This is the 5th officer-involved shooting in Westminster this year. The last officer-involved shooting in Westminster happened on August 26th.

The suspect’s name has not been released pending an autopsy by the Adams County Coroner’s office.
