FREMONT COUNTY- Fremont County Commissioners say they’re one step closer to picking an interim sheriff to finish out the term of resigning Sheriff Jim Beicker.

Next week commissioners will meet and schedule interviews for a handful of candidates. A special meeting will be held on September 4th where the new sheriff will be announced.

Since Beicker announced his intent to resign, effective September 1st, the county has received application packets from 8 people interested in taking the job.

Beicker announced his resignation for personal reasons on July 31st. He did not seek re-election this year and would have been out of office following the November election.

The announcement came after a turbulent year in the Fremont County Sheriff’s Office.

Former detective with the sheriff’s office, Robert Dodd, is accused of hiding murder evidence in a storage locker for the 2006 unsolved murder of 17-year-old Candace Hiltz.

In June, Deputy Christopher Pape was arrested in Pueblo County on suspicion of forgery of a public record and official misconduct along with other charges.
