DENVER – The Denver Fire Department is on the scene of a natural gas explosion that injured nine people Tuesday afternoon.

The Denver Fire Department said one person suffered critical injuries, another person was transported to the hospital and seven others suffered minor injuries.

The explosion happened a little after 1 p.m. in a four-plex near near North Santa Fe Drive and 4th Avenue. DFD said no children were hurt in the explosion, but there is moderate damage to surrounding buildings.

Firefighters said they could smell gas when they arrived and worked for more than an hour to extinguish a fire burning in the remnants of the building.

There is no word yet on what sparked the explosion. An investigation will begin when the scene is safe.

Santa Fe Drive is closed from Ellsworth Ave to 5th Ave. Side streets in the area may also be affected as first responders work near the scene.
