Westminster Police are investigating an officer involved shooting after a theft call on Thursday afternoon.

The call came in around 2:10 p.m. for an incident in the 11800 block of Sheridan Blvd., according to a press release sent by police.

A suspect reportedly threatened loss prevention workers with a knife during a theft attempt. One suspect ran off and another took off in a vehicle. Police found the vehicle as the driver tried to get away.

Officers said they made several attempts to disable the car before shots were fired. The suspect tried to hit an officer who was out of his patrol car and that is when the officer shot at him.

The driver was hit and was taken to the hospital where he was pronounced dead. The second man who ran off was arrested a short time later. The officer involved was not hurt.
