EL PASO COUNTY — An inmate at the El Paso County Jail who transferred from Florida has tested positive for COVID-19.
The El Paso County Sheriff's Office says the inmate was initially tested after his arrival because Florida is a coronavirus hotspot. But they said his test results were not received before he made his initial court appearance this week.
Since his test results became known, a public defender has been placed in self-quarantine and the inmate is in isolation, along with seven other inmates who rode to the courthouse in the same van, as a precaution
The sheriff's office has had 10 positive COVID-19 cases, including a deputy that worked at the jail who died earlier this year.
