GUNNISON COUNTY – Ramps and marinas at Blue Mesa Reservoir are closing or limiting service to boaters for the rest of the year due to extremely low water levels.

The National Park Service (NPS) said Colorado’s largest body of water may reach historic lows, so they’re asking slip holders to get their boats out of the water by Friday.

The Lake Fork Marina and Boat ramp will then close at the end of Monday as will the Elk Creek Marina. However, the Elk Creek boat ramp will remain open as long as possible.

Water levels at Blue Mesa Reservoir near Gunnison are approaching an historic low on Sept. 6, 2018.

The Park Service said low water is also creating new navigation hazards, so boaters who travel on the lake before the closure should use extreme caution.

The NPS said the closure will not affect operations at the nearby Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park.
