CNN –  If you get a call from an unfamiliar number that rings once and hangs up, don’t call back. The Federal Communications Commission is warning everyone about a new phone scam they call the “one ring” or “Wangiri” scam.

This is how the scam works: A scammer places a robocall to a number and hangs up after one or two rings. They might call back several times with the goal of getting you to call back. When that happens, you are prompted to pay long distance fees to connect the call and that money is usually paid in part to the scammer.

The F-C-C says the numbers can come from anywhere. But recently, the agency is noticing a lot of international numbers. So if you are not expecting a call from overseas, don’t call back.
