BENT COUNTY – News 5 has learned Undersheriff Frank Gallegos died on Christmas Eve.

According to the Bent County Sheriff’s Office Facebook page, Monday he was on life support. He was taken to a hospital in La Junta, before being moved to a hospital in Pueblo.

Hours later they confirmed he died. A post reads, “We are heartbroken, Undersheriff Gallegos has passed peacefully. Please keep the family both blood and blue in your prayers. End of Watch: 12/24/2018. We have the watch from here.”

There’s no word yet on exactly what led to his sudden death.

Frank Gallegos spent 20 years as Chief of the Rocky Ford Police Department.

Gallegos and other Bent County command staff were set to leave their positions in January upon the inauguration of a new sheriff.

Check back with News 5 for funeral arrangements once they are announced.
